How to Reduce Dust Mites Naturally
How to Reduce Dust Mites Naturally
Dust mites – you can’t see them but for some people they can be quite uncomfortable. These tiny little organisms can cause all sorts of allergic reactions in some from itching to runny nose to rashes and they will certainly disrupt your sleep.
Here’s how to get rid of them:
#1 – The best strategy for fighting dust mites is to give your bedding an overhaul. Although, this may add up in costs, your health will be all the much better for it. Start by purchasing a natural organic wool mattress – many are purposely made with fillers that will help to combat dust mites naturally.
Clean, cotton bedding is helpful too. Ideally, change and wash your bedding twice a week and if possible air dry outside under the sun.
A good mattress protector means that the dust mites won’t get deeply embedded into your mattress. There are also several natural anti-dust mite sprays on the market which you can spray your bedding with to help reduce the occurrence of dust mites.
You can also keep a new mattress wrapped in plastic to avoid dust mites getting into the fabric in the first instance.
The main goal here is to keep the bedding dry and clean so that dust mites don’t have a chance to multiply. You can easily do this by regularly changing your sheets and bedding and letting your mattress air out.
#2 – Get rid of the carpet. If possible change your carpet for natural wood flooring. Not only is this a more hygienic and eco-friendly option but it can also greatly reduce the number of dust mites living in your home.
#3 – Get rid of the curtains. Like carpet, curtains can hold dust and therefore are a breeding ground for dust mites. Try using plain roller blinds instead, wooden ones will work well too.
#4 – Dust free surfaces. Keep things as dust free as possible in the home. Along with replacing curtain and carpets with other alternatives, keeping surfaces uncluttered and reducing the amount of extra “fabric” in the home (such as cushions, stuffed animals, etc.) will help the problem. This lessens the chance of dust settling into the fabrics and creating more mites. It also makes dusting easier in the first place.
Although it’s unlikely that you can completely get rid of dust mites, the above solutions will help the problem.
